Some Video Game Podcasts for 2025

Rest Those Eyes
There could be so many reasons why, at times, we may want or need to take a break from gaming. Perhaps we have a drive into work. Maybe we need to start dinner or are working on our blog. Or it’s time to settle down for the night and give our eyes a break. But we’re still looking to stay engrossed in video games. Whether it be for some deeper knowledge of video game history, or maybe the latest happenings on the homebrew front, we’re not ready to step away.
These are my 3 recommendations for video game related podcasts to start listening to in 2025, presented in no particular order. Keeping this to 3 is somewhat limiting in terms of hitting a wide breadth of subtopics. However, I wanted to keep this initial list manageable so that giving each a listen would prove easy. Within these confines I think I’ve gathered a well-rounded cross-section of podcasts to start off with.
Retronauts
Retronauts could be considered the grandfather of gaming podcasts. Billed as the “original classic gaming podcast”, it dates back to 2006 at1Up.com. Though it ended with the death of that great gaming site, fortunately for us it rose from the ashes, with no less than original hosts Jeremy Parish and Bob Mackey resurrecting the show.
If you are looking for a healthy dose of video game history and nostalgia, this is the podcast for you. Recent episodes run the gambit, from a discussion on the Bronze Age of Arcade Games to an introspection on the First Games that Scared Us. An aspect of the show that I quite enjoy is the revolving slate of guest hosts and participants. You will often be presented with different voices discussing the topic of the day. Yet the conversation is always well thought out, fun and engaging.

The XB2 – A Gaming Podcast
The Xbox Two Podcast is a great selection for anyone looking stay on top of what’s happening in modern gaming. If the show title wasn’t a giveaway, it is decidedly focused on Xbox topics. That being said, I’ve found the discussion well-rounded and researched. Talking points routinely center around themes touching upon the entire industry, while the dialogue remains grounded and unbiased. Even more, the chemistry between the hosts is dynamic and lively, resulting in an energetic and fun listen.

The SEGAGuys
I still remember discovering The SEGAGuys podcast. On a long trip, I realized my downloaded podcasts wouldn’t be enough to keep me occupied. I had been on a Sega Saturn kick. So, I thumbed through podcasts with a Sega focus. I was fortunate enough to stumble on Dan ‘the Mega Driver’ and James ‘the SEGAHolic’. I haven’t looked back since.
On a bi-weekly basis, they provide a fun romp through all things Sega. I appreciate the broad breadth of Sega-related topics discussed. What could easily fall into solely a nostalgia filled ‘remember when’ talk, instead touches upon everything from current homebrew releases to Sega’s most recent business plan. Add to that the requisite historical analyses and an on-air rapport that draws you in, and you end up with a great podcast listen.
